www.gardenguides.com is a great resource for all of your gardening questions and needs, including how to start your own compost!

From my own experience composting I have learned that it isn’t as easy as you think. Although tiny organisms and insects do all the recycling work for you, they need the proper chemical conditions to do so. With too many fruit and veggie scraps, your compost bin will start to smell, but with not enough fruit/veggie scraps, it will be too dry. Also, you can’t just throw in your scraps as you please, you should cut them up (depending on how fast you want them to decompose), and you should also make six inch layers of scraps/grass clippings/leaves alternating with soil/manure to facilitate decomposition. My last caveat is to avoid all meat and dairy products, or else you might have visitors!
